Cannondale Factory Racing’s Marco Aurelio Fontana took the team’s first victory of 2010, winning the Italian National Cyclocross Championship. Near Milan, Fontana outplayed the pre-race favourite Enrico Franzoi and won his second cross title in three years. While Fontana was fighting in the mud, teammate Martin Gujan had to fight in the snow of Rennaz at the Swiss Championships. After a last minute crash, Gujan finished in 6th place.

The result in Italy came as a surprise, as Franzoi had topped Fontana in their previous head-to-head races in this cross season. But national championships have their own rules, and Fontana countered Franzoi’s early attacks and claimed a 30 second gap when Franzoi was hindered by a flat tire. Fontana had a flat tire right after the tech zone and had to ride about 2 kilometres before he could change his bike, but Franzoi was already too far behind to rejoin.

In Switzerland, Martin Gujan was not one of the favourites for the podium, but made the best of his outsider position. Right from the beginning, three of the favorites got away and the medals were gone: “I never had a chance to come back to the leading group. I felt really strong in the second group and had a chance to finish fourth,” Gujan said. “But at the end I crashed in the last corner and the others came around me. I am not so happy with sixth place because there was more for me to take home from here.”
